What is less-lethal protection?

Less-lethal tools are built to stop a threat from a distance while being far less likely to cause death or serious injury than a firearm. Byrna and PepperBall launchers use CO2 to fire kinetic or pepper projectiles, and Hawaiʻi does not classify them as firearms.

  • Works from a distance

    No hand-to-hand contact needed.

  • CO2 powered

    Kinetic or pepper projectiles.

  • Not a firearm in Hawaiʻi

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Byrna launchers legal in Hawaii?

Yes. Byrna launchers are not classified as firearms in Hawaiʻi and do not require a permit or background check. Electric guns such as TASER devices are legal to own, but the buyer must be 21 or older and complete an in-person background check and briefing at a licensed dealer (HRS 134-82, 134-84). Pepper spray in Honolulu must be sold by a licensed dealer, and we are licensed under ROH § 41-27.

Do I need a permit to buy from SafetyStoreHawaii?

For Byrna launchers and PepperBall devices, no permit is required, but you must be 18 or older. For TASER devices, there is no buyer permit, but you must be 21 or older and complete the background check, signed declaration and safety briefing in our store. We walk you through it at the counter.

What is the difference between Byrna SD, LE, and CL?

The SD is the all-rounder, most popular, .68 caliber, 60-foot range, 280 FPS. The LE Gen 2 is the upgraded platform, same caliber and range but 330 FPS, smoother trigger, red-dot ready. The CL is the most compact launcher in the world, .61 caliber, same 60-foot range, designed for concealed carry.

What ammunition do Byrna launchers use?

Three projectile types: kinetic (solid plastic, blunt impact), pepper (OC chemical irritant), and Max (OC + CS tear gas blend). All sold separately. .68 caliber for SD/LE/EP/HD, .61 caliber for CL.

Can I test a Byrna before buying it?

Yes. Free demos are available at our King St location during business hours (Tue–Sun 10am–5pm, closed Mondays). Call ahead at (808) 489-2454 to make sure a representative is available.

Why buy from SafetyStoreHawaii instead of online?

We are a licensed Hawaii dealer. Online sellers from the mainland cannot legally ship pepper spray to Honolulu (ROH § 41-27 prohibits unlicensed pepper-spray sales in the city). When you buy from us you get a Hawaii-legal product, the required point-of-sale safety briefing, a signed acknowledgment retained for 5 years per statute, and same-day pickup or local shipping. Plus you support a local Hawaii business.
